Shorne Marshes Nature Reserve

Shorne Marshes, previously known as Milton Ranges, lies within the South Thames Estuary and Marshes SSSI. The site is managed as a typical lowland wet grassland/coastal grazing marsh, one of the Government’s priority habtitats within the National BAP. There is an emphasis on managing the land for breeding waders and wintering waterfowl. The main habitat management work over the next period will involve the maintenance of grazing infrastructure, water level control scrub/thistle control. Monitoring of bird populations and annual surveying of important non-avian UK BAP species such as water voles and great crested newts will be undertaken. Intellectual access will be enhanced through the provision of interpretation on the reserve and at Shornemead Fort.
