Overall, they seek to acquire 690 hectares (ha) of the Smithills Estate, Bolton - currently under threat from neglect & decline. In Woodland Trust ownership, they will protect & improve valuable habitats e.g. woodland, blanket bog & heath, improving the area for wildlife. Key plans include doubling woodland cover to link & expand existing areas. On Bolton's doorstep (1.3m people are within a 20 minute drive) the project is valuable for people, whom will be involved through events & volunteering.
