Somerset’s Mendip Hills – Linking Species Rich Grassland

This is a 3 year project that will enable Somerset Wildlife Trust to secure the future of three priority grassland habitats – calcareous, acidic and neutral grasslands – across the Medip Hills. This will be achieved by working with landowners to increase the connectivity of the grassland habitats and ensuring that the best possible habitat management is in place. By focussing on already diminished grassland habitats, the project will help to protect a large number of dependent species such as the Skylark, Chalkhill Blue Butterfly and the Cheddar Pink. The project area stretches from Cheddar in the west to Frome in the east and contains 1700 hectares of priority grassland. The project will employ a full time Advisory Officer who will, through the SWT support the owners of priority grassland to deliver the best possible habitat management across their land.
