South Stoke Recreation Ground Wildflower Area

The recreation ground was dramatically improved about 15 years ago and a wildflower area was created. This has been a terrific success and has been extended once. This proposal is to convert a further area of long grass into a wildflower area, in a slightly more shady area, increasing its facility for wildlife, and improving the appearance of the site.

We have used the existing wildflower area to demonstrate wildflower and invertebrate identification in public events and to the Primary School- adding a new area will support and expand this activity in the future.

The site is highly visible and is a popular destination for villagers.

The work will include preparing the seedbed, mixing seed with dry sand, marking out quadrants and sowing and raking evenly across the site. Monitoring germination and establishment of new wildflower plants.

The area will be be closely mowed once a year following guidelines for managing a wildflower area.
