South Walsham Marshes, Norfolk – Habitat Improvements

This project will create scrapes and improve water level management at NWT’s South Walsham Marshes, providing new foraging sites for cranes and their chicks and other priority species eg water vole, bittern, otter. Installation of two new viewing shelters to showcase the site’s wildlife spectacle.
Create and restore 0.6ha of scrapes , Install a new water control structure, Reprofile and dredge 1190m of dykes, Install 700m of fence line to secure the area for conservation grazing, Install a marsh viewing shelter.

There is a small breeding population of cranes at South Walsham, but they lack enough secure foraging habitat on the reserve to raise their chicks. The project will provide the necessary nursery habitat to allow chicks to fledge on site, thus enabling the local recovering crane population to expand.
