Southern Country Park

Wetlands are a priority habitat for the Habitat Action Plan (HAP). In Hertfordshire, there is a small total area of reedbed habitat and critically small population sizes of several key species dependent on it.

This project will see more common reed planted and undesirable species removed enhancing the habitat for wildlife and making it a more efficient filter medium.

Re-designing and effectively vegetating the banks will aesthetically improve the lake and the new habitat will benefit wildlife.

The pond banks will be re-profiled creating a wider, shallow margin that will be vegetated with native species. The work will create habitat for a wide range of wildlife including breeding habitat for newts.

We would also like to create a new wildlife pond to benefit invertebrates; this will be designed and built to be used as an educational resource.
