Sporting Facilities on “Britain’s Roughest Street”, Slade Road, Birmingham

Project installs community all-weather facilities, with 2 fully enclosed bays. This space lends itself to diverse community use, taking children off surrounding dangerous streets(Slade Road), labelled Britain’s ‘Roughest Street” filled with gangs/violence/prostitution/crime – located in top 10% most deprived areas in England(Decile 1 IMD, 2019).

Project Beneficiaries: Local children participating in weekly cricket(age 5 to 18), neighbouring Naseby Youth Centre and Highcroft Community Centre who use our site to bring deprived young people together and keep them away from criminal activity/youth violence. This project provides the first all-weather facility in the area, diverting local youths to wider array of productive/engaging activities.
Project allows important community/societal groups to utilise outdoor-space in all-weather conditions, currently there’s only grass areas available, which is limiting when wet.
Social benefits:
+Community centre sessions(Naseby Youth Centre/Highcroft Community Centre)could run all-year-round, even when wet, currently can’t offer anything outdoors for half the year, gap in calendar opens up youths to being enticed into gangs/crime.

+Transforms lives of youths/homeless that’re surrounded by gangs/violence – providing an outlet for productive recreation and fostering healthy lifestyles.

+Youths currently have nowhere to go(no all-weather facilities)this project transforms local facilities, taking youths away from gangs/violence/crime/prostitution.

+Discourages anti-social-behaviour in most deprived area in England, Slade Road labelled “Britain’s most dangerous” – ASB is due to lack of accessible provisions for young people locally(this project rectifies).

+Free access will be given to ALL – this is vital given surrounding deprivation(Decile 1, IMD 2019).

Economic benefits:
+All-weather facilities can be used to host youths with training/qualification opportunities(e.g coaching), in partnership with neighbouring Community Centres which support deprived/troubled youths to gain training/employment qualifications, in a community where unemployment rates are exceptionally high!
