St Bridget’s Clock, Bridekirk

This clock is an excellent example of the workmanship of the very important local turret clockmaker John Blaylock of Carlisle and is dated 1875. The family was originally from Longtown where they manufactured longcase clocks in the 1770’s but moved to Carlisle in 1818. The family continued manufacturing longcase clocks but eventually moved into the Turret clock market. Their first Turret clock eventually moved into the Turret clock market. Their first Turret clock was manufactured for St Lawrence’s Appleby in 1834 and they continued up to 1888. He is also responsible for the clock at All Saints Church, Cockermouth as well as several others throughout the county.

The clock movement in the tower is in good mechanical order but needs to be dismantled, cleaned and an automatic winding facility installed to alleviate the need for 3 day winding.
