St John’s Community Hall, Flixton, Manchester – New Heating and Decoration (005747)

St John’s Hall was built in 1930 to serve Flixton, Manchester, as both a church and community facility. A purpose-built church was erected in 1968, and the hall is now used almost every day, by general public including Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, a children’s Holiday Club, a weekly singing club for children with special needs, Trafford Heart & Stroke Club, Greater Manchester Allergy Support Group, church groups, and around 30 children’s parties each year.

However, it has never been modernised: its heating system is worn out, inefficient and obsolete; it has little insulation; there has been damage from water ingress; and its decorative state is poor. It has potential for much wider use, with a greater variety of community activities, if it can be upgraded and refurbished.

The project will weather-proof the building; renew the heating system and insert a suspended ceiling to reduce energy usage, re-decorate, and improve storage facilities, in order to see the hall completely renovated and transformed.
