St Julian’s Road Public Park

Creation of a public park on the site of a former landfill site at St Julian’s Road, Omagh.

As a former landfill site, detailed surveys would be required to establish whether or not the land would be suitable for alternative use. The local council (owner of the site) are of the view that consultancy costs and the likely foundation design and gas control measures that would be required to allow commercial development on the site would not be cost effective. They therefore consider that future use should be limited to activities that do not require excavation to a depth of more than 0.5 metres to ensure the landfill is not disturbed.

This restriction severely limits options for use of the land as evidenced by the site lying vacant since closure of Omagh Town Football Club who were based at the club ten years ago. Proposed works to develop a park on the site will overcome these limitations and this restoration/remedial work will bring the former landfill site back into social/community use.
