St Magnus Church – Tower Repairs

The existing steel beams supporting the tower masonry are badly corroded. The condition of the beams is now such that they all need to be removed and replaced, as further decay of the steels may result in crushing of the beam sections particularly at the supports where the loads from above transfer through to the walls below. Movement and cracking of the masonry will occur if the damaged beams are left as they are, affecting the stability of the tower above. The repair work will comprise of temporary support of the wall above, on needles fitted through the masonry and supported on props onto new concrete foundations onto the rock below the ground floor. With the propping in place, new beams either made of lengths of steel or as an alternative, reinforced concrete, will b put in place.
