Projects / St Martin’s Community Vegetable Garden

St Martin’s Community Vegetable Garden

To create an accessible community garden in an unused area of St Martin’s churchyard which is always publicly accessible. The following items will be purchased: secure storage shed, bench, tools, hose, raised planters, soil, compost, seeds and plants. The installation of an outside tap will allow access to water. A small team will oversee the project and the garden will be available for anyone to work on whenever they choose and for anyone to help themselves to produce. Surplus produce will be donated to local hubs to support those in need. There will be space to sit and socialise. Local groups such as the men’s breakfast team, bereavement group, schools, children’s, youth, and uniformed organisations will be involved in the project and learn about growing vegetables. Aside from learning about food growing, additional benefits will include nutritional and health, mental health and wellbeing, reduction in loneliness and isolation, and discouragment of antisocial behaviour in the churchyard.
