St. Matthews Church Bell, Westnewton

St. Matthews Church was erected in 1857. Previous to that year this part of the parish was dependent for its religious ministrations upon the church of Bromfield. The want of more church accommodation had long been felt by the local people and a Manchester Merchant and native of the area generously came forward and offered to build, at his own expense, a church, parsonage, school and residence. The offer was accepted and the church cost about £1,000 to build. The church is in the early English style, consisting of nave and chancel, with several stained glass windows. This project is for removal, repair and restoration of the church bell which is presently inoperative.
