St Paulinus Church Heating Project, Erith, Kent

This is a project to replace a failing heating system at St Paulinus Church in Crayford, in the London Borough of Bexley. St Paulinus Church is a Grade 2* listed building. The replacement of the heating at the church is imperative to ensure that the building can continue to be in regular use, and also for the preservation of the ancient memorials and organ. It is proposed to use an ecclesiastical heating company to install a low-pressure hot water system, which will produce three times the heat output of the old system, whilst using one fifth of the water content. The system will have two gas boilers – one for the main worship area and one for the vestry areas. The new system will heat the main fabric of the building as it is designed to warm the walls, which then form heat banks. By heating the church in this manner humidity is stabilised. This is very important for the roof timbers, organ tubes and inner workings.
