St Richards Centre, Birmingham – Community Space Refurbishment 4 (007506)

The Church interior was damaged by arson in 2005. Insurance monies replaced the roof and brought 50% of the building back into use. With the help of Veolia Environmental Trust and other grant funding organisations the remaining space has been refurbished in phases to bring the building back to be fully usable by the church and many community groups. This is the final phase of the refurbishment to insulate a light-well/lantern area in the multi-purpose hall and complete the refurbishment of the new entrance. The large light-well area allows plenty of natural light into the area but negatively it allows plenty of heat to escape, many down drafts and much aircraft noise infiltrate the area. One side of the lantern is simply poly-carbonate. The best option recommended by the Architect and Council to reduce heat loss whilst retaining natural light is to install a new clear ceiling half way up the lantern.
