Stocken Orchard grassland and orchard continued management for biodiversity

This Project will allow for annual pruning of the trees to be carried out by horse-loggers (minimising damage to the grassland from vehicles), along with a demonstration of horse-logging. An onsite interpretation/information board will also be designed and installed. The purchase of a trailer will ensure machinery can be moved to site for removing the fruit and for grassland management. Stocken Orchard was purchased through a LCF biodiversity grant and the site has had further LCF funding for fencing, initial restoration pruning and the purchase of harvesting equipment. Pruning needs to continue, to let in light to the grassland to benefit wildflowers and associated pollinators while ensuring appropriate management of the cider apples. The apples will be harvested and some will be removed as an important part of the site management and any derived income will go towards the ongoing site management costs. The number and variety of wildflowers have already increased due to the grassland and tree management.
