Stonehouse Newt Ponds

Stonehouse Newt Ponds are 3 ponds on publicly accessible land next to Court View, Stonehouse, one of Gloucestershire’s historically best sites for newts, and a Key Wildlife Site as an important amphibian wetland/meadow. The newt population has fallen from 144 great creasted newts counted there in 1985, to 3 great crested newts found in Stroud Valleys Project’s annual community bottle-trapping count in Spring 2012. We want to restore the ponds and surrounding habitat to favourable conditions for newts. Most of the habitat management tasks will be carried out by community conservation volunteers supervised by a skilled Project Officer. We will also help local residents create ponds in their gardens.
