Swadlincote Woodlands, Derbyshire – Environmental Enhancement Project (006198)

Swadlincote Woods is 33 hectares of informal open space that includes meadow, wetland and woodland owned by South Derbyshire District Council. The site is located within the urban setting of Swadlincote Town. Management of the site is provided by SDDC, volunteers and the Trust for Conservation Volunteers.

Originally created with the restoration of derelict land that resulted from the closure of a pipework factory in 1972. In 1995 investment was provided by National Forest Company and others to establish an urban forest park. The ambition for this site is to achieve Local Nature Reserve designation this will help enhance habitats for species but also ensure visitors gain a better experience.

The applicants are looking to create areas dedicated to insects such as the of butterfly and wish for volunteers to gain a better experience. The project specifically also seeks to turn the meadow land into a wildflower meadow and a butterfly bank. Pond dipping platforms to allow safe access to the water.
