Taf Fechan Biodiversity Project

Taf Fechan Nature Reserve 42ha of ancient broadleaved woodland, calcareous and acidic grassland, river gorge and cliff, providing some of the most diverse habitats in the Taff Valley.

The reserve has a number of protected species, such as otter, several bat species, pied flycatcher and small pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly. The project will focus specifically on managing and creating habitats for these species. Such management will include the creation and management of scrub and bracken for the small pearl-bordered fritillary and otter and the creation of shelters for otter, bats dipper and pied flycatcher, through bat roosts, otter holts and bird nest boxes.

The project will also engage with academic institutes so that opportunities to undertake scientific research on the reserve can be made more readily available to students and volunteers.
