Ten Acre Pits Dell Project, Friends of Ten Acre Pits, Knowsley

Ten Acre Pits is a 1.4 ha woodland lying within the Paramount estate, Huyton. This site has been embraced by the surrounding community through recent establishment of the Friends of Ten Acre Pits. A key feature of the site is a former pond that is now dry but unusable and inaccessible by the community due to its base being periodically wet. Steps lead down to the centre of the pond and a low wall lines the base. The group proposes to develop this feature as an enclosed ‘Dell’ that would have woodland wildflowers growing on its sides, informal seating on the low walls and a hard surface on the base. This space would form a focal point for community activity including events and performances as part of our programme of activities, as well as more specialist work, such as educational activities and outdoor classroom work by local schools. The ‘Dell’ would become a key attraction for the site to improve local people’s appreciation of their local green space and spend more time within it.
