The Bushmills Courthouse restoration project is a key initiative focused on protecting both
the built and natural environments while promoting social cohesion.
– Built Environment:
– The Courthouse is a Grade 2 listed heritage building that has been in disrepair and placed
on the heritage at risk register. The project will preserve and restore the building’s historical
architecture, maintaining its original features while repurposing it as a creative hub. Planning
and Listed Building Consents (ref: LA01/2021/0293/F and LBC LA01/2021/0294/LBC) have
been obtained, ensuring that the restoration complies with regulations for preserving historic
structures. This will prevent further deterioration of the building and protect it as a valuable
cultural landmark for future generations.
– Natural Environment:
– The project has prioritized the natural environment by conducting thorough ecological
assessments before construction began. Two detailed bat surveys were conducted,
confirming no bat colonies were present. Additionally, swift boxes have been installed in the
new build extension to support local wildlife and biodiversity conservation efforts. These
steps demonstrate a proactive approach to environmental stewardship, ensuring that the
project has no negative impact on the natural surroundings.
– Furthermore, the project integrates energy-efficient practices. We are aiming for a BREEAM
rating of “Good” and have adopted low or zero-carbon approaches during construction.
Planned operational measures, such as energy-efficient lighting (LED bulbs), improved
insulation, and airtightness, will align with Net Zero initiatives and contribute to the reduction
of our environmental footprint.
– Social Environment:
– The restored Courthouse will serve as a vital social space for the community, providing
workshops, exhibitions, and events that promote learning, creativity, and cultural
engagement. This hub will enhance social inclusion by bringing together people from
different backgrounds and fostering a sense of community. The focus on social wellbeing will
further support diverse groups, contributing to the overall social health of the region
