The Dee Eel Restoration Project

The Solway Eel Management Plan highlights the concern that eels (a UK BAP species) cannot access into the River Dee due to the salmon ladder.
Galloway Fisheries Trust aim to help the situation by;
– Quantifying the numbers of elvers ascending the lower Dee.
– Using this time series in the future to monitor stocks (baseline for Solway eel stock)
– Capturing and releasing elvers upstream of Tongland salmon ladder so as to once again establish an eel population in the lower and mid Dee catchment (includes Loch Ken and Black Water of Dee)
– Publicising concerns of falling eel stocks Europe wide.
– Encouraging other eel restoration work on local rivers.
