The Dukes of the Chilterns

The Duke of Burgundy is one of the UK’s fastest declining butterflies, having suffered a 46% population decline between 1995-99 and 2004-09. It is listed as a species of principal importance under Section 41 of the NERC Act (2006), and was highlighted as a UK BAP Priority Species. The Duke of Burgundy is restricted to nine colonies in the Chilterns landscape, a further 21 colonies having been lost in since the 1980’s, equating to a 71% loss. These populations are considered highly vulnerable; many are small and isolated and could easily be lost. This project will maintain and improve a discrete area of suitable habitat for the Duke of Burgundy in the southern Chilterns landscape. It will make a significant contribution to national and regional conservation targets for this rare, beautiful butterfly. This 18-month project will be led by a part-time Project Officer who will supervise a programme of practical conservation work undertaken by contractors and volunteers.
