The Gatehouse Tower: Eddy Sackville and mid-20th century Knole

The project will refurbish the interior rooms of the gatehouse tower to enable the spaces to be opened to the public for the first time in history. Introducing the character of Eddy Sackville, we will engage visitors and the local community in a multisensory way with Eddy’s passion for the visual arts, literature and music, discovering and telling new stories about 20th century Knole.

The first floor room will be presented in the style of Eddy’s bedroom and furnished with original pieces from the collection on loan from the Sackville Estate. The second floor room will be returned to Eddy’s music room. Ceiling and walls in both rooms will be redecorated, the colours matched to the 1926 scheme. We aim to create an enjoyable, inclusive visiting atmosphere where visitors of all ages are made welcome with multi-sensory interpretation that excites and challenges.
