The Japanese Garden

The Friends have implemented a rolling programme of improvements to widen the access, relevance and appeal of the Gardens. The Japanese Garden, formally known as The Winter Garden, was neglected – overgrown, unsafe and unappealing. Phase 1, laying out the ‘bones’ of the design, has been conducted using voluntary labour and is now complete. Phase 2 for which we are seeking funding, comprises the majority of the planting, construction of entrance and internal gates, archways, seating, bamboo fences and screens. The construction, with the exception of some specialist work , will be using voluntary community labour.
