The restoration and interpretation of the Grade II* listed ‘Brunel’s’ Drawing Office on site at Brunel’s ss Great Britain, for visitors to enjoy for the first time.

To understand the historic layering of the Grade II* listed Drawing Office To restore and refurbish the Drawing Office, which lies alongside the ss Great Britain To open the Drawing Office to visitors for the first time with disabled access To allow the telling of the story of the screw propeller and its impact on the world shipping industry today This project will allow the public to enter the building for the very first time – with disabled access – and learn the story of the screw propeller, which was a defining moment in I.K. Brunel’s career, and one of heightened emotional and intellectual intensity. The aim of the refurbishment will be to strip away the layers of the building to take it back as it was in the 1840s when Brunel was designing the ss Great Britain. The restoration work will expose the ‘bare bones’ of the original building so that it can then be bought alive by interpretation. Like objects, buildings can tell a story and make history come alive.
