The River Lea Source Restoration Project

The river Lea rises in Luton from springs within the ‘Wauluds Bank’ Neolithic monument site in Luton. It is thus a site of both natural and historical significance for the region as a whole. However despite its location within a well-used public park the source is little known or valued. Key reasons for this are that it is currently overshadowed by large trees, public access is poor and overgrown, clear views of the source are limited and there is no on-site interpretation.

The aim of the project is to address these issues and improve the biodiversity of the site through various works by contractors and volunteers.

These works were originally identified following public consultation in 2009 and confirmed via further consultation in Feb 2014, including local groups such as Marsh Farm Outreach, Marsh Farm 50+group and the Luton Friends of Parks and Greenspaces. Luton Culture’s Education Service which regularly hosts school visits to the site also supports the project.
