The Wyshe Play Area, Pyecombe - Public Playground refurbishment (008365)

The project will refurbish the only play area in the rural village of Pyecombe, located within the South Downs National Park.

The site borders Wolstonbury Hill, a Site of Special Scientific Interest known for its calcareous grassland, which is a key consideration in the design.

Following public consultation, local people they would like a space that is inclusive and accessible for the whole community. They want a safe, accessible and secure space where children of all ages can play and be active from toddlers to teenagers. It is also important for adults to have somewhere to relax and socialise.

The project aims to deliver what people have requested by balancing play, accessibility, and environmental sensitivity, creating a space that reflects local needs and protects the unique landscape.

•Transform an outdated play area into a sustainable, inclusive space for Pyecombe’s 300 residents.
•Provide safe, accessible play for children, with seating and social spaces for parents and carers.
•Foster community cohesion and wellbeing through a welcoming, multi-generational space.
•Improve accessibility for people with limited mobility and families with pushchairs.
•Offer activities for all ages—from swings and climbing units to table tennis and chess.
•Reflect community feedback gathered through public consultation.
•Deliver improvements via a carbon-neutral supplier with strong sustainability credentials.
•Protect and enhance biodiversity within the SSSI, improving surrounding habitats"
