Upper Aire Floodplain Project

This partnership project will restore and expand UK BAP wet woodland habitat within the river Aire catchment. In the UK and sub-regionally within the target area wet woodland has seriously declined with only small, severely fragmented areas remaining. Woodland cover in the Region is 5.8% (some 92,000 ha) of which wet woodland makes up only 343 ha in the Region (The National Inventory of Woodlandand Trees 2002). The habitat is even rarer on the Upper Aire where the floodplain is predominantly grazed permanent grassland. The project will target 4 sites along the valley creating 2 new areas and altering two existing young woodlands to create wet woodland areas within them and create features found in wet woodlands.
