Projects / Upper Don Valley Ancient Woodlands

Upper Don Valley Ancient Woodlands

The project will deliver woodland management on three sites of woodlands classed as ancient woodland; New Hall Wood, Birks Wood and Glen Howe Park, to contribute to UK BAP and LBAP Priority Habitats objectives. Work will be delivered by the Steel Valley Project (SVP) staff, training and supervising volunteer trainees who are developing skills and qualifications required in the land based/countryside management industry. Works will include control of non-native species and woodland management by; selectively thinning trees, coppice management and “topping off” standard trees to create standing dead wood. The objectives for such works are to enhance the value of these sites to people and wildlife, by enhancing and creating a diversity of habitats. This includes diversifying the age and species composition of vertical and horizontal structures within these woods.
