Villa Place Community Garden

To create a new, sustainable, community garden (approx. 480m sq.) as multipurpose public amenity, accessible to all. To remediate a derelict brownfield site, improving quality and diversity of local natural environment. To engage local community, improving skills and capacity through structured volunteering. Context: Thornton, Hull, is one of the UK’s most deprived innercity housing estates, dominated by high/low rise flats and maisonettes. Area lacks safe, attractive green spaces or cultural facilities. Project identified through community consultation. Local groups involved include: Darley’s youth group, Danny’s Dream (disabled adults and carers), Tuesday Club (senior citizens), Haven (refugees/asylum seekers), Primary School, Children’s
Centre. Project requires site clearance/hard landscaping by building contractor. Small-scale construction, planting, decoration to be undertaken by volunteers. Quality/safety assured by architect and volunteer coordinator.
