Viva Vanellus – Saltholme

The project will create a safe habitat for lapwing and other breeding waders. Saltholme is internationally designated for its rare and endangered species, however recent surveys show that the breeding success of the lapwing is in decline. We will install an anti-predator fence around a 27ha designated site to provide a safe breeding area for lapwing. This technique has been used with good success on other RSPB reserves and we believe that lapwing (and other species) chick survival rates will significantly increase once this fence is installed. We will use interpretation to educate visitors about the predator & prey chain and explain why this work is necessary.
