Walking and Cycling the Levels

Research in 2014 found that the Newport coast is poorly connected with local communities. This is partly because signposting is lacking, which makes orientation around the levels difficult and potentially intimidating. Furthermore, the lack of promotion around these paths means that many residents and visitors do not know they exist. By developing access points and effective signage we will encourage local residents to experience and begin to understand the levels. Bringing this heritage story forward will inform local communities to create a sense of pride and help visitors and users understand the development and heritage of this globally important man made landscape.

Community action will take place first as part of the wider Living Levels Landscape partnership. Many of the sites are in areas with breeding birds, reducing the window of when the work can take place, resulting in a slightly longer timeframe in which to complete the proposed works.
