Wandsworth Common Woodland, London - Glade creation and management (008539)

This project delivers woodland restoration on Wandsworth Common to improve habitat structure, reduce erosion and strengthen long‑term community stewardship. It builds on the 2025 volunteer established glade supported by the Friends of Wandsworth Common. The site is a Borough Grade SINC and LNRS priority woodland, with surveys showing improved biodiversity in open areas. A defined woodland path will address erosion and compaction, using timber from thinned non‑native species. Felled wood will form natural edging, with woodchip surfacing supplied by the Council. Heavy horses will transport timber to protect the woodland, reducing machinery impacts and soil compaction. Two existing glades will be enhanced through selective thinning and bramble reduction. Volunteers will build dead hedges and install habitat features using retained material. A new glade will be created by removing non‑native trees and retaining standing deadwood.
