Water for Wildlife – BAP Mammals and Wetlands Project

The aim is positive nature conservation for Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) mammal species, otter, bats, dormouse and harvest mouse and to improve BAP river and adjacent wetland habitats using a volunteer task force . Work to be delivered includes:
1. Premliminary site visits will be carried out at 6 key sites to confirm suitability and which of the BAP species to focus on.
2. Volunteers will be recruited and then trained on site to access the habitats for one of more of these key species and to seek field signs of them with identification literature provided.
3. Materials will be sought to carry out habitat improvements, including building dormouse and bat boxes and floating rafts. Agreed trees on site will be cut down to build artificial otter holts.
4. Volunteers will be trained how to do this.
5. The volunteer task force wil carry out habitat management including scrub management, coppicing and boardwalk repairs and be shown how to erect bat and dormouse boxes.
