Projects / Water Vole Reintroduction at Magor Marsh

Water Vole Reintroduction at Magor Marsh

The project builds upon GWT’s preliminary works to scope and plan the reintroduction of water vole to Magor Marsh, a SSSI and remnant of the once extensive fenland of the Gwent Levels. It forms part of a long-term vision to establish viable and free ranging populations of water voles, with an initial introduction taking place in June 2012, agreed by scientific consultation as an appropriate first release site. The project will expand mink monitoring and control beyond the core release site and develop a robust control programme in the wider landscape, to promote conditions conducive to the spread of water voles and contribute to conservation of this UKBAP species.
