Wellington Monument – 200 years of stories…and more to come

Wellington Monument is a grade II* listed building and the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world. It was built to commemorate the Duke of Wellington’s success after the Battle of Waterloo. But as a result of different factors, it is now in need of urgent repair. There are visible cracks, stones are falling away and we have recently had to prop a section. It has had to have been fenced off to protect the public. Our project aims to repair the monument and protect it for future generations. This means a significant programme of repointing, replacing stones, filling voids behind the front-facing stones and using mechanic ties to hold the stones in place. We are also working with the local community and engaging them in the project. There is a high level of local ownership and they are keen to see the project happen.
