Wetland Creation for Water Quality Improvement and Biodiversity

The design and construction of a wetland treatment system capayble of reducing suspended solid, BOD, ammonia and nutrient levels to acceptable thresholds, conducive with high quality water for nature conservation, hence protecting and enhancing all water bodies in the Washington Centre. It is also hoped to build features of the constructed wetland to maximise biodiversity with particular emphasis on wetland species of local importance (eg Reed Bunting, Sedge Warbler and Water Rail) and to demonstrate and interpret the value of these multi-functional wetlands to visitors, policy makers and other interestedprties in then industrialised north east.
