Whinney Hill Green Space

The aims of the project are to improve access into, and through the site, to encourage greater usage and habitat improvements to enhance the existing flora and fauna. The site is an industrial reclamation site that was landscaped and planted with trees a number of decades ago. We will initially commission a habitat survey. The first major piece of work will be to create a new 625 metre path out to the west of the site that will form a link to Whinney Hill Road and Clayton-le-Moors beyond. The second major piece of work will be to thin a large area of the existing woodland. We will work to eradicate the large stands of Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed on site. This will be done with contractors (Knotweed) and volunteers (Balsam). Other smaller elements will include new entrance gates, a noticeboard, bird boxes, benches, and waymarkers. Finally, to ensure that the site is cared for in the future we will carry out a series of practical conservation days on site.
