Wigan Fenscape Project

The project will restore an area of fen habitat between the Wigan Flashes, Pennington Flash and Hope Carr. This will involve practical conservation work on the mosaic of grassland, fen and reedbed habitats through a programme of bed lowering, ditch creation / blocking and scrub removal. The project will address the fragmentation of habitats by creating a connected ecosystem essential to wetland species in an urban environment.
The proposed work will be undertaken by volunteers (720 volunteer days) where possible as we are keen to see local people taking an active role in the management of their sites, developing a sense of pride in the place that they live, and engendering a sense of ownership.
