Wigan Flashes LNR Project

The project aims to enhance Wigan Flashes by continuing to transform a landscape formed by mining subsidence and subsequent tipping of post industrial material. The aim is to improve reedbed habitat by re-wetting through lowering the ground level, raising the water table and creating ditches to improve the wildlife quality of the reedbeds. The project aims to conserve and improve other important habitats on the reserve, including mossland, wet woodland and fen. Through such improvements the project aims to extend and enhance the habitat available to endangered species such as bittern, willow tit and water vole. Through volunteer and community engagement the project also aims to educate and involve the local community regarding the importance of this rare habitat site.
