Willington wetlands, Derbyshire - Stork enclosure and wetland habitat improvements (2) (008382)

This project will create a high quality habitat in a prime Trent Valley wetland, installing the infrastructure needed to reintroduce key missing wetland species using the most sustainable approach for carbon and biodiversity. White stork are both a missing apex wetland species and an iconic species for volunteer and visitor engagement. The project will:

Create and enhance wetland habitats across a 46 Ha site
Integrate missing native species in habitat works, from black poplar to Exmoor ponies
Build a resilient predator-proof enclosure with quarantine facilities for a legacy of species reintroductions
Install a flightless white stork magnet population
Engage existing and new volunteers through opportunities to get involved in habitat intervention activities
Engage volunteers with citizen science, monitoring the site and biodiversity uplift
Publish an interactive digital map that engages new visitors with the site and it’s white stork
