Winkle Island, Hastings – Refurbishment (1866/D)

Winkle Island is located at the corner of Rock A Nore Road, All Saints Street and the A259 [The Bourne]. It faces the sea. The Stade Open Space, Stade Hall and Jerwood Gallery are across the road. Winkle Island is in need of improvements. The existing memorial plinth and flagpole will be retained. ESCC and Hastings Council have agreed to pay for new paving and bollards.

The 6 existing wooden memorial benches are over 20 years old and beyond repair. The grant will pay for more durable stainless steel and wood benches [6]. It will also provide for 2 new Interpretation boards. One will explain the Winkle Club history which includes a visit by Sir Winston Churchill.

The Trust grant will contribute towards the seating and interpretation.
