Wiveton Downs – Glaciers, Grazing & Grassland

The 11ha site of Wiveton Downs SSSI is an area of lowland dry acid grassland with visible remnants of glaciation following the last ice age. This project will remove some of the scrub, install fencing and introduce grazing by highland cattle, to create a sustainable dry acid grassland habitat. The aim is to improve the condition of the site and ensure its long term management for the benefit of wildlife and improved biodiversity. One section of fencing (Eastern compartment) is required to replace a worn out fence to enable continued maintenance of the habitat through a previously trialled grazing regime. A previously ungrazed compartment on the Western side of the road requires fencing to allow grazing to create a larger area of dry acid grassland habitat.
