Wolvercote Lakes Pond

The pond is on a nature reserve with free permissive public access. We estimate that the reserve has between 7,000 to 10,000 visitors per year. The lakes are part of the “Wolvercote with Godstow Conservation Area”.

The aim of the project is to create an additional small shallow water body with gentle sloping banks to diversify the variety of water bodies on site and complement the two existing large deeper, steep sided groundwater fed ponds (borrow pits created during the building of the railway). This new pond will be separate from the two large ponds and supplied by surface water run-off and precipitation and consequently be able to support a different flora and fauna to the main ponds including species that do not currently breed in the existing ponds e.g. amphibians.

The new pond will be planted with a selection of native species from the site’s existing ponds and a number of other species not on site, including some uncommon / rare native local plants.
