Wood Lane Nature Reserve Educational Improvements

New wildlife pond: Although many pools exist, they are fishing/wading bird pools, low in wildlife, therefore creating a wildlife pond will allow groups to explore freshwater habitat, plus existing woodland and meadow habitats.

‘Ice and Rock Field Station’ teaching facility: Some elements have not aged well and need updating/replacing: Removal of damaged mural and replacement, cleaning and repainting of concrete ‘glacier’ path, painting/resurfacing of indoor rocks signs to remove black mould, improve lighting inside, proofing of ceiling to prevent fall of debris from bird/rodent nests in roof, removing vegetation that is encroaching on the building to let more light in and reduce damp issues.

Two bird-watching hides: Need exterior painting.

Habitat management and maintenance: To enhance and manage biodiversity through tree and scrub management, plus wetland habitat management including control of invasive crassula, an invasive aquatic plant introduced to Britain from Tasmania in 1911.
