Woodberry Wetlands – Reedbeds

As part of unique programme habitat enhancement to be delivered in partnership with landowners Thames Water and the London Borough of Hackney, London Wildlife Trust will create 1.2 ha of reedbed at the East Reservoir, Stoke Newington and in doing so provide significant biodiversity benefits to this designated Metropolitan Site of Importance for Nature Conservation.

In creating new reedbed habitat of this size, we aim to maximise the number of reed buntings, a UK, London and Hackney BAP priority bird species, and reed warblers that currently breed at the site. This project will also provide additional habitat for over wintering Bittern, a ‘Red list’ species that is a rare visitor to the site. Dredged sediment and newly built chestnut fencing will be used to establish a rich and unparalleled ecological mosaic of wet and dry reedbed, water channels and pools, at varying widths, in the shallow waters along the edges of this 7.5 ha reservoir.
