Woodbridge Tide Mill – New Water Wheel

The project is to rebuild the waterwheel and wheelhouse.
The five-story timber Tide Mill, built in 1793 on the site of the tide mills since 1170, is one of only five such mills left in the UK. While the mill has been well looked after, after some 40 years since the last restoration in an aggressive environment on a tidal river, and with changing regulations (health & safety, fire, disability discrimination, building etc.) further restoration and preservation work is urgently needed, particularly to the foundations and the wheel. The water wheel has broken this year (the wheel shaft remains in working condition), and specialist millwrights’ opinions are that the wheel and wheelhouse are at the end of their useful lives.
