Woodhouse Washlands Nature Recovery Project

This project will form part of a wider nature recovery project, led by Sheffield City Council. The project will improve green and blue spaces across the Rother Valley – such as woodland, meadows, heathland, ponds, rivers and streams – helping to tackle nature and climate emergencies. Mammals like harvest mice, bats and hedgehogs; reptiles, amphibians and birds including barn owls, skylarks, swifts and kingfishers, will benefit from enhancement to their habitats, thanks to the funding.

This funding will unlock essential restoration work across the Woodhouse Washlands nature reserve including:

– Preservation of hedgerows by hedge laying
– Restoration of 400m of wet ditch
– Installation of a barn owl box
– Improvements of the habitat for kingfishers
– Restoration of a pond for great crested newts
– Enhancement of lowland floodplain meadows
– Fencing to protect nests of harvest mice, lapwings and skylarks
