Woolley Firs Arable Reversion

Woolley Firs sits within a 300-year-old arable farm with woodlands, meadows and ponds. As the current farmer ends their tenancy, BBOWT has the opportunity to take over the management of a 20 hectares site.

The site has previously been intensely farmed resulting in the removal of nutrient value and habitat for vegetation and wildlife. We want to restore and rewild the site after years of intense farming returning it to a rich, biodiverse habitat.

To achieve this we plan to:

Carry our 14ha of reversion works to convert land to grassland, including reseeding with a grassland and herb mix including deeper rooting and nitrogen fixing species such as sainfoin and chicory.
Create 3ha of non-intervention natural regeneration woodland.
Plant 600m of hedgerow, trees and shrubs
Install water infrastructure and 2000m of fencing to facilitate grazing
Purchase electric fencing to sub-compartmentalise and control grazing pressure around the site.

These works will help give the land back to nature.
